My name is Neil Paddock - I have attached a picture of my grandfather, Arthur James Thorne (known as "Jim") in the 3rd Carabiniers in 1937. He died in 1996 aged 91, and would have been 100 on 6th July this year.

In his own words he "joined the 17th Lancers in 1920 [aged 16] (Death or Glory Boys) and served 2 years in Ireland. Served at Tidworth and Aldershot. Went to India 1928 and served in three different regiments [9th Queens Royal Lancers (1930), 17th/21st Lancers (1933) and 3rd Carabiniers (1937)].Was posted as a Farrier Staff Sergeant to the 3rd Carabiniers and stationed Cavalry Barracks, Hounslow.

Met my wife at a regimental dance. Married 8th August 1936. Sept 26th sailed on the troopship [HMT] Somersetshire to India. Jan 24th 1938 our daughter Valerie was born Military Hospital Sialkot, India. Was made redundant and left the army 1939 owing to mechanisation."

I find these pictures fascinating - and they are incredibly sharp considering their age.

The regimental one was too big to scan in one piece, and I'm new to digital retouching, etc but I have reproduced it as faithfully as I can.

Hope you find these interesting - let me know

 Thanks
